The 1965 German presidential election occurred on 7 October 1965 and was the first such election to occur in three decades. Sitting President Hermann Göring announced in August that he would be stepping down pending a new electoral system, however the private reason was due to his failing health and old age. After the drafting of Germany's new constitution, Göring threw his support behind Admiral Karl Dönitz, an inoffensive choice and a dedicated national socialist. The admiral won unanimously by voice vote, and Göring resigned the following day.
