  • Point of Divergence Shanghai, China: 22 March – The Shanghai Police arrest and jail a lone gunman who attempted to assassinate Premier-designate Song Jiaoren. Song emerges unharmed, but the incident intensifies China's already tense political situation between Premier Song and President Yuan.
  • Beijing, China: 9 May – Less than a month into the assembly of the Legislative Yuan, tensions between the Yuan and the presidency reach a boiling point. President Yuan Shikai orders the Beiyang Army to dissolve the legislature after the Nationalist Party introduces legislation to circumvent the presidency for all legislative matters. His troops soon occupy government buildings. Premier Song narrowly escapes arrest at his home in the capital and flees southwards to meet former President Sun Yat-sen.
