20th Century

1960s

1961

  • January 20 – Richard Nixon and Robert B. Anderson are sworn in as the 35th President of the United States and 36th Vice President of the United States respectively.
  • April 12 – Yuri Gagarin of the Soviet Union becomes the first human in space and the first to successfully orbit the Earth.
  • April 17 – President Nixon authorizes the invasion of Cuba with the goal of ending the Castro regime.
  • April 18 – Nixon addresses the nation regarding the invasion of Cuba, promising a swift victory over Castro and liberating the Cuban people from communism. Khrushchev blasts the invasion as "American aggression" but his support only extends to verbal support for Castro.
  • May 5 – Alan Shepherd becomes the second human in space after the successful launch of Freedom 7. President Nixon personally calls Shepherd to congratulate him for the success of his mission.
  • June 4 – President Nixon meets Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev in Vienna for the first time as President.
  • June 21 – Havana falls to American and Cuban exile forces, however Castro is nowhere to be found. His government moves to Las Villas (known as Placetas to the communists).
  • June 22 – A new Cuban government proclaimed in Havana and receives immediate recognition from the United States.
  • October 15 – Fidel Castro commits suicide to avoid capture. His body is found by American forces in Ciego de Ávila.
  • December 23 – The last fighting between Cuban-American forces and communist guerrillas is reported. No other encounters are reported after December 23.

  • March 2 – Chinese and Soviet forces clash at Damansky Island, both sides blaming each other for the incident. With Sino-Soviet relations strained to the breaking point, the Sino-Soviet War unofficially begins.
